5 Proven Tips for choosing the perfect outfit for your photo session!
Choosing an outfit for your next photo session can seem stressful-what do I wear? What colours should I choose? Keep reading for my five tips for choosing the perfect outfit for your next session!
Step 1: Coordinating Colours
I always tell people choose coordinating colours not 'matchy, matchy'. Choose colours that compliment each other and base your clothing choices off of that. Pick a palette of 3-4 colours. Let this be your starting place. Think in terms of tones: blue tones, earth tones, neutrals, pastels, etc. Pinterest can be a great help in finding "mood boards". In the above photo you can see that the client chose a pastels colour pallet for their summer beach session. They chose two pastel colours and threw in some neutral greys and blacks to bring it all together.
Step 2: Take a look at your home Decor
If you are like me and getting photos done then you are probably planning on getting them printed and hung up around your house! This is something to consider when planning your outfit. You want your photos to reflect and match the colours and tones of your house so that they can look the best when hung up. Questions to ask yourself: Is my decor light and airy, neutral colours or jewel toned? You might want to base your outfit colours off that!
Step 3: Patterns
Stripes, plaid and polka dots- lets talk patterns! As much as I LOVE patterns we don't want everyone wearing clothing with a print. This can become very distracting in a photo. Instead, I encourage clients to choose one or two people in the group to wear a pattern that has colours that match/compliment everyone else!
Step 4: Accessories
When planning your outfit don't forget to think about the little details. As important as the shirt, or dress that you wear are, remembering to think about the shoes you have on your feet is just as important! (Pssstt..this is more for the guys) Make sure they have shoes that work with what you are planning! If your kiddos don’t have shoes you love for the outfit you chose them, consider borrowing some from a friend, or checking out the Walmart clearance for a cheaper option. Consider bringing a hat, or wearing some fun jewelry that you love, this can add that ‘pop’ to your outfit that you were hoping for!
Step 5: Characters and Brands
Elmo, superman and old navy? Yes, you may have that superhero T-shirt that you love, and I know, that Aeropostale shirt is so cute-but your photo session may not be the best place to display them. Just like having too many patterns in a photo, characters and brand names distract from the final result.
If you ever have any questions about your outfit choice talk to your photographer! They will be more than happy to help you figure out the perfect outfit!
