Family photography session tips
Use these tips to reduce any stress you may be feeling about your upcoming family session!
Plan outfits ahead of time
Plan outfits at least two weeks ahead of time! Choose something your kiddos feel confident in, the better they feel in their outfit the more excited they will be to show it off to the camera! If you have multiple outfits you are choosing between consider letting your little one choose between the three options, this will help them get excited about this super special session you are doing. Consider letting them choose a bow, or necklace on their own to add to their outfit. Lay outfits the week before and whenever your kiddo sees them remind them about how exciting it is that they get to wear this special outfit on the big photo session day! The more you can get everyone hyped up in your house about your session the better!
2. Consider bringing some snacks
No! Not to bribe your kiddos. Bring a snack just in case your toddler, hubby or your 10 year old is genuinely hungry! It doesn’t even have to be a treat; it can be a granola bar, or veggies. I suggest snacks that aren’t going to get all over clothes and little hands and faces!
3. Let go of your ‘vision’ for your photographs
Yes, we have all seen those “picture perfect families” on Pinterest, but don’t try to recreate that- your job is to focus on interacting and connecting with your family, supplying the tickles, kisses, and hugs. Because in the end this is YOUR family and you want these images to reflect your real selves not some random family on Pinterest.
4. Movement is a yes from me!
Movement is the key to keeping your photo session exciting for you and your kiddos. Want images like the ones you have seen all over my website? Then don’t be afraid to move and have fun! Small movements such as swaying, touching arms, eskimo kisses, and fixing hair can add such depth and connection to your images. I always encourage a mixture of small and big movements! This can look like you running with your kids down the beach, bear hugs, tickles and swinging. I will guide and direct you throughout your whole session, so you always feel like you know what you are doing.
5. Don’t force it
Never force you toddler to do something they really aren’t feeling at your session. I like to say that I guide and direct you throughout your session but your toddler really leads it. If they aren’t enjoying running along the beach and would rather sit and look at some rocks, or dip their toes in the water for a bit then that is totally okay! The key is that you engage with your toddler when they are doing these things. We can always come back to some key shots we wanted to get a little later on in the session.
“We’ve had Wryghte Photography take our family photos several times and it’s been an excellent experience each time. We all have fun (even my husband!) and almost forget the camera is even there! The photos are beautiful and always capture our family perfectly. 10/10 would recommend to anyone looking for priceless family photos.”
